Unresolved Murder in Fort Myers, Florida, 27 Year Cold Case. “David Comparetto was not a threat to anyone. He was a young man with physical problems, learning disabilities. He was a hard worker. If he had a flaw, it was these clubs."

Tomorrow marks 27 years since 30-year-old David Comparetto was found burned alive in the trunk of his light blue 1985 Ford Tempo in Lee County, Florida after leaving a local club. Investigators are still searching for leads or witnesses nearly 3 decades later.
Background
Sam and Patsy Comparetto adopted David when he was only 5 days old. David was born with a club foot and didn't have muscle in one leg, resulting in scoliosis in his back. He also suffered from developmental disabilities and learning disorders. Patsy described her son as a shy, naive young man who would always be dependent on them.
David was often teased in high school and struggled socially to fit in with his peers and colleagues. His mother describes him as very trusting, often thinking that everyone he encountered was his friend. In early adulthood, David told his parents that he longed for a girlfriend despite never having been on a date.
In newspaper interviews from 1998 and 2000, Sam Comparetto recalls David’s discovery of local strip clubs shortly after his 21st birthday. David began spending all of his time at several local clubs, giving his money to his new friends who were employed at the clubs. Sources report that David spent a lot of time with the owner of Paradise Club and often ran errands for many of the girls that worked at various clubs, filling up their cars with gas, bringing them food and providing transportation.
Patsy and Sam showed up at the clubs many times to pick David up after he had been taken advantage of “financially or otherwise.” Patsy says David realized that the clubs were not providing the romantic connection he was seeking but he felt that he was addicted to going and couldn’t stop. He was supposed to meet with a counselor two days after he was murdered.
The Case
On October 16, 1993, David Comparetto left his part-time job at a Fort Myers Publix. The timeline varies a little across sources. The original 1993 report states that David left his job around 9:30 pm, but reports from 1997, 1998 and 2000 show that investigators believe David actually left Publix around 8 pm and headed to the Mermaid Dance Club, a since closed strip club in the Kmart Plaza. He reportedly was only there a short time before heading to Bert’s Club, another since closed dance club off of Colonial Blvd. David was last seen leaving Bert’s around 10:30 pm.
Shortly after 11 pm, investigators discovered David’s 1983 Ford Tempo on fire in what was then a remote part of Lehigh Acres, around 11 miles east of his last location. Investigators opened the trunk and discovered a body burned beyond recognition. Dental records later confirmed David’s identity and police believe he died from smoke inhalation. They believe he was placed in the trunk while he was alive and the car was doused with an accelerant before it was lit on fire.
Investigation
The first newspaper clipping linked below from October 18, 1993 (two days after David’s murder) focuses on a club owner named Jaime Carrillo who reportedly spent a lot of time with David. Carrillo was arrested almost 3 months before David’s death for trying to arrange a deal with undercover feds for 50 kilos of cocaine. Early reporting seemed to focus on David and Carrillo’s connection but investigators and reporters have not discussed this connection since this early report.
Lee County Sheriff Sgt. Gill Allen, a friend of the Comparetto family, led the initial investigation. The Sheriff’s department had little forensic or physical evidence to work with because of the state of David’s vehicle. The car was completely engulfed in flames, destroying any evidence that may have been in the vehicle. Investigators have always believed that someone at one of the clubs David frequented has information about what happened to David despite no witnesses coming forward.
In 2000, the city installed a billboard on Colonial Blvd imploring the public to come forward with information. They offered a $21,000 reward, $20,000 provided by the Comparettos and the city of Fort Myers and another $1,000 from Crimestoppers. Despite the publicity and the reward, no suspects have been publicly named and no arrests have been made.
In 2008, Crimestoppers announced that they had a new lead. A black 4-door mid-size car with shiny chrome wheels that frequented the same clubs as David may be connected to the crime. As of today in 2020, this lead has not generated any additional information about what happened to David. Investigators are still actively looking for witnesses and believe that David’s murderer was a frequent customer at the Mermaid dance club.
“The answers are out there – they always have been,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers coordinator. “For whatever reason, people who know who did this horrific thing to David have remained quiet all these years, and it’s time for the silence to come to an end. David’s family should not have to endure one more year without seeing justice served. His killer or killers do not deserve one more day of freedom and, most importantly, David needs to finally rest in peace.”
Anyone with information about the 1993 murder of David Comparetto is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $3,000.

Idk

MR ASBESTOS
Introduction
It was November 2002 in the shitfuck city of crystal fucking river. All was well. Amongst the barracks of the cleanest looking water in florida was the dirtiest meth filled streets. On these streets lived the man the myth and the wigger some call Mr Asbestos. He wore a Bucaneers hate backwards. He called himself Tampa Bays biggest rapper even though only 20 copies of his album “The man who all women wanna suck the cock of” only sold 20 copies. He was best friends with club owner Morin Tobias. Morin Tobias often helped Mr Asbestos film his rap videos and what not. Morin could either be caught drunk or high if he wasnt working. If he was he always had a desert eagle in his hand because people would often break into his club and steal his shit if he wasnt looking. He didnt have any security systems or call the cops because he running the club illegally. His club was called “Bitch come smoke weed here” and as the name suggests it was a place where people would party and smoke weed. Mr Asbestos would often kind by and hookup with a random drunk chick. He got in for free since hes best friends with the club owner. Throughout the 25 years he had been alive hed never face as big of a challenge as this.
The Rap Album
Mr Asbestos was working hard on his new album since the commercial failure that was his debut album. Mr Asbestos needed a place to record his shit since everything cost more money than he had. He didnt wanna record at his house since thats what he did last time and it failed. Mr Asbestos sat down in his shitty trailer home and wrote down some lyrics. “My names asbestos my rhymes are so good youre gonna catch asbestos” shit like that. He needed money to record with so first option Mr Asbestos chose was to get a job. Mr Asbestos didnt wanna get a job. But he had no choice he needed to make money for his album. First place he went to was Morins club. “Ayo Morin dawg can I have a job?” Mr Asbestos asked Morin “Sure I can pay you $4 an hour for cleaning the toilets.” Morin responded. “Mofo minimum wage is $5.” Mr Asbestos yelled very pissed. “Yeah if you dont like it dont work here. Im running this place illegally half the people in there are under 21.” “Fine bitch Ill get a job elsewhere.” Mr Asbestos searched and searched for a job but there was no hope. Every place had rejected him and he needed money for an album. So Mr Asbestos turned to The Recording Industry of Crystal River (TRIOCR) to help him out. “Yo look I need money so I can spit some fire on the most fire album youll hear can you get that for me.” Mr Asbestos told the executives. “Look we’ll give you $10,000 and will give you until January to pay us back.” The executives told him. “Look dawg that shit is finna be the best selling album of 2003 that shit going platinum. Ill have like a million bucks fo yo asses.” Mr Asbestos said. So Mr Asbestos used his $10,000 to buy some studio time. He spent a lot of time in the recording studio and was working hard to achieve his dream. The big day came. The day of the albums release December 1st. Mr Asbestos was confident today because he thought his cds would sell. He had no rights to sell it in stores so he sold his shit by passing it out on the street. He got up early at 8am to stand in one spot behind the Kmart. People came and went. A couple people bought it. Morin kept tally of how many people were buying it. Mr Asbestos was feeling great about it. Days end Mr Asbestos and Morin decided to drive home. “Yo Morin how many people did you that bought that shit?” Mr Asbestos asked. “Well Mr Asbestos let’s see.” Morin flipped thorugh his notebook. He found the page and said. “Mr Asbestos according to the page I wrote down it looks to me like 2 people had bought a copy of your album.” “What the fuck dawg. Bull fucking shit you mustve not been payin attention.” Mr Asbestos repsonded, angry. “Mr Asbestos I payed close a goddamn ttention to what was going on and yeah thats how many people had tooken a copy home with them.” Morin repsonded. “Well shit I promised the executives I’d have the money for them and have a million copies of this shit sold.” “Well I gotta genius idea. Lets hold a concert at my club.” Morin suggested. “Dawg thats genius thanks brah I owe you one.” It was now the day of the concert and nobody really cared about it. Mr Asbestos was up and stage rapping and people didnt like it. 15 year olds started throwing beer bottles at him. Mr Asbestos had lost all hope. Mr Asbestos’ next decision was to film a music video. “Morin dawg do you have one of those fancy cameras that can film HD n shit?” Mr Asbestos asked Morin. “Mr Asbestos are you off your rocker. Those things are $100,000 fucking dollars.” “Dawg I really need something for my new music video man.” “Look man I got a camcorder at home its not fancy HD one but itll get the job done.” Mr Asbestos waited until new years day to film it because there was a big party going on at the club that day. That day came and Mr Asbestos asked Morin “Dawg can I use your club to shoot my shit.” “No im running this club illegally no filiming. You know how much trouble I could get into.” So Mr Asbestos went elsewhere. He decided to film it in Morins home. What a good fucking idea that was.
The Crystal River Mafia
Mr Asbestos was shooting the music video with a couple of hookers he had hired to be in it. Mr Asbestos was confident that this was thing that was gonna make records fly off the shelves. Midway through Mr Asbestos got a knock at the door which how did they figure out he was in Morins place were they stalking him? “Open the fuck up were heavily.” Mr Asbestos had never been in a situation like this before but he realized what he had to do. Film the men with guns about to kill him so the album would sell. So Mr Asbestos set his camera up on the tripod and said to the hookers “Go hide in the bedroom, Im finna sort this out.” The mafia continued to pound on the door. “3.” Mr Asbestos was the most excited he had been in his life. “2.” Just what Mr Asbestos had been waiting for. “1.” In that one second what felt like 20 minutes. They burst through the door wearing camo suits holding AK-47s. The mafia boss stepped in front of his millita. “So wheres my $10,000.” Morin was heading home because he had changed his mind and really could care less whether Mr Asbestos filmed in the club or not. As Morin pulled up to his house in his red 1986 Ford Mustang he wondered why there was a millitary outside and inside his house. So he pulled his desert eagle out and cocked it back. He slowly exited his car so he couldnt be heard. He walked up on his porch and yelled “All right Id like to know WHAT THE FUCK the millitary is doing at my house.” It was a man with a pistol vs 10 men with rifels so Morin didnt wanna make any stupid decisions. “We want $10,000 and the guy we want $10,000 from is at this location.” The Mafia boss responded so Morin said “Mr Asbestos what in the name of fuck did you do to make the mafia want $10,000.” Morin said angrily. “Well I borrowed it for my album bruh.” Mr Asbestos responded. Morin was so visibly pissed that I could feel how pissed he was while writing this. “Ok look I dont want anyone killed here. I have $10,000 I was saving up for a house but ill give it ya’s.”
A Lesson Learned
The mafia guys left because Morin gave them $10,000. “Well Mr Asbestos I wont be getting a new house but theres an important lesson to be learned. Dont borrow money.” Morin suggested. “Ive leanred my mofoing lesson dawg. Im retired from the rap game.” Mr Asbestos repsonded. “Well you can have a job at my club for $6 an hour.” Morin said. “Holy shit $6 and hour bruh thats a dollar above minimum wage.” Mr Asbestos was now happy. He didnt have to continue selling drugs that wouldnt sell. Selling his albums that woulnt sell. He had a job. Well an illegal job. But still a job. “Mr Asbestos! What the fuck are these naked whores doing in my bedroom!”

13 Ways to Save Money Passively (Best Passive Money Saving Apps/Sites 2018)

Are we really doing this again already?
About 6 months ago I made the second version of this post, which listed 10 ways for you to save money passively.
Since that post I have found quite a few additions and I feel like it's already time for an update.
Just to clarify, this post is mainly just an update to the previous post. Some points made here will be exactly the same from last time, but there are a lot of additions and clarifications this time around.

13 Ways to Save Money Passively 2018

Drop - (iOS | Android)

Completely Passive, Ref = fish

In the first post I said:
If anyone asks me, "Fishering, what is your favorite beermoney app?" I'll respond with Drop.
12 months later, I don't totally know if that's exactly true, just because Drop has gone through some changes that has made it seem (psychologically) not as great as it once was.
For those of you who don't know what Drop is, Drop is a passive loyalty program that allows you to choose 5 popular stores where you'll earn cash back (automatically) at as soon as you shop at them (both online or in store). Here are just a few of the stores you can pick from: Walmart, Macy's, Dunkin Donuts, Target, Whole Foods, Walgreens, Starbucks, Uber, McDonalds, and my personal favorite, Chipotle! There's about 20-30 stores you can pick from for your perm. ongoing offers.
If you signed up for drop in the previous post, you might not have noticed this, but they have actually changed their program a bit since then. There's a good chance you didn't even notice any differences at all, but they have recently set a weekly limit of $5 in cash back, and they seem to be wanting to limit what purchases count for cash back.
From Drop's TOS:
Drop users are limited to earning a maximum of 5,000 Drop points per calendar week (Sunday – Saturday) in connection with Drop’s ongoing (as opposed to one-time) offers. Drop maintains the right to review the accrual of points and to determine, in Drop’s absolute discretion, if certain transactions qualify for Drop Offers. Certain spending including, but not limited to, repeat purchases, high-value purchases, purchases of gift cards, and purchases made for commercial, non-personal or non-household purposes, may not, at Drop’s absolute discretion, be considered Qualifying Transactions and may be ineligible for Drop points.
Source. I really do recommend you take a look over this.. there are a lot of hidden secrets in Drop, like that 5000 point limit per week, while most people won't spend $500 (with 1% cash back) in a week, it still makes this program seem so much worse.
Anyways, if you're not signed up for Drop, it's really a great app. I've been enjoying it since its launch and I've made a fair amount back in savings from it.
Cash outs are instant and start with various gift cards at $5 (5000 points). (Amazon is $10 minimum).

Spent (iOS | Android)

EDIT: Spent has just announced a referral program! For every friend you refer you'll get a $5 bonus when they earn their first cashback. Additionally, all friends you refer will receive $10 when they sign up. Here's my referral link. You might have to click on it from a mobile device in order for it to track correctly. It seems that Spent has done away with the referral program.

Almost Completely Passive

Spent is very similar to Drop... so if you like Drop, chances are you'll also enjoy Spent. Unlike Drop, with spent you'll earn 1% cash back at all of the stores they offer, so you don't need to pick just your favorites. Here are all of the stores that Drop offers 1% cash back at. (Note: All of the stores with strikethroughs are stores that were originally offered, but have sent been removed).
  • Starbucks
  • Amazon
  • Spotify
  • Netflix
  • Grubhub
  • Walgreens
  • Uber
  • Panera Bread
  • Staples
  • Petsmart
  • Costco
  • iTunes
  • ExxonMobil
  • 7-Eleven
  • McDonalds
  • Kroger
  • The Home Depot
  • Chick-Fil-A
  • Whole Foods
  • Shell
  • Chevron
There are a few things about Spent that are better than Drop, but there are also a few things that are negatives here.
I'll go ahead and make a nice little pros/cons list of Spent.
Pros of Spent:
  • $10 Sign up bonus (may or may not require referral link used?).
  • PayPal cash outs.
  • Manage transactions in the app.
  • Cash out minimum $0.01 w/ Gift Card Discount
Cons of Spent:
  • $20 Minimum cash out (PayPal).
  • Cash Back takes 1 month to get approved from pending.
Spent is also similar to Drop because you must link your bank account to it. This seems to be a common trend with these apps. And yes, Spent does stack with Drop, but Spent might not stack with other Empyr apps. You'll learn more about Empyr later in this post, or just CTRL+F for "Empyr". Just note that when you link a card with Spent you might have just unlinked your card from another Empyr app.
One thing I want to update about Spent is how cash outs work now. Since the original post a year ago I think it's important to note some changes. Cash outs for Spent are done through PayPal at $20 minimum (payment is sent instantly?). However, in the app they now have an option for you to purchase gift cards at a discount. So for example, you could be somewhere that Spent doesn't support.. Let's say Papa John's... and they'll let you buy a Papa John's gift card on the app and you'll receive 3% back. If you have any cash back balance you'll be able to use that to help pay for the gift card (or pay for it entirely, if you have enough balance). I can see this being a viable "cash out" option for users who feel like they'll never hit the $20 minimum. It won't be a free gift card, but a discount nonetheless. Do note that if you're someone who is only using drop for the 1% cash back at the select retailers listed above it will take you $2000 in spend to reach the $20 minimum cash out. That could take a while for some people, depending on how much you spend at these places.
One other thing about Spent that's worth mentioning is that it does also offer shopping portals online (spentapp.com) and you'll be able to find cash back for Travel/Hotels/Rental Cars. Just something worth checking out if you're interested in it. They also have an app called Spent Travel you might want to check out.

Pei ref = fish

Completely Passive

Pei is another new automatic cash back app, very similar to Drop & Spent. Pei is (as of posting) in an invite only system and they seem to be slowly letting users in. I was able to get early access since I'm 'Media'. I'm not sure how you can get invited into this app at this time, but if you read what I have to say about Pei that you find interesting, feel free to download the app and join the waitlist. I'd imagine soon they'll just let everybody in at once.
The one important thing to note about Pei is that it does run on the Empyr network. I was in contact with Pei about this and they confirmed that if you link a different Empyr app you will no longer receive the benefits from Pei. This is different from Spent since with Spent you can link your card (at which point your card will unlink from your previous Empyr app), but then link your card to a different Empyr app and you'll still get the 1% cash back offers to pay out. Just the local offers on Spent won't pay out. With Pei if you unlink your card, the whole app will break. So I'm going to try and convince you here that Pei is different from the other Empyr apps, and might be interesting and worth taking your one Empyr app slot.

Pros of Pei:

  • Cash Back at a lot of locations (way more than any of the other Empyr apps).
  • Cash out via PayPal or Bitcoin.
  • Stacks w/ Drop & Spent

Cons of Pei:

  • Steep $15 cash out minimum.
  • Hard to track where your points are coming from (no history page with transactions?)
So with all of that being said, let's talk about the stores you can find on Pei. Just note that these are only stores that are local to me, so if I don't have a certain store near me that Pei offers, I won't have it on this list. Please feel free to leave a comment informing me of what I'm missing.
  • Panda Express - 1.5%
  • Target - 1%
  • Petco - 1%
  • PetSmart - 1%
  • Sephora - 1%
  • Banana Republic - 1%
  • American Eagle Outfitters - 1%
  • Gap - 1%
  • Old Navy - 1%
  • Chipotle <3 - 1.2%
  • Taco Bell - 2%
  • Dominos Pizza - 1.5%
  • CVS - 1%
  • Starbucks - 1%
  • AMC - 2%
  • GameStop - 1.2%
  • Subway - 1.5%
  • 7-Eleven - 1%
  • Dunkin' Donuts - 1.5%
  • Walgreens - 1%
  • Nordstrom - 1%
  • Supercuts - 2%
  • ZARA - 1.2%
  • Express - 1%
  • H&M - 1.2%
  • Urban Outfitters - 1%
  • + Local locations - ~5%
Please let me know if there is anything inaccurate about this list if you're able to get into the app.

Paribus

Completely Passive

Paribus is not your typical cash back site. Once you sign up you can link your different accounts (such as your amazon account) and it will automatically track your shopping. Paribus doesn't directly earn you cash back... it acts more like Walmart's saving catcher if you've ever heard of that. If an item you buy somewhere goes on sale shortly after or if there's any other discounts/promotions you may have missed when you originally bought something, they'll quietly get you a rebate on whatever you purchased. It can be very hit or miss. The catch is that they do take a cut of your savings. I believe it is 30% for all new users, but for each member you refer you can cut the cut by 5%. If you save $10, they'll charge you $3 to whatever card you have linked.
Personally I've found it to be really hit or miss, but I've found some incredible savings. I bought a gopro and I got $15 saved with Paribus, and I also got $50 back from some really nice headphones I picked up on amazon from Amazon. What's weird is I bought the headphones like 6 months prior to the rebate. Was shocking to see it, but I've really had some good luck with Paribus.

Sift (iOS | No Android)

Completely Passive

After the last post, I noticed a lot of people enjoyed Paribus, so I figured it'd be good to add some alternatives in this post.
So, here's Sift. Sift is a similar site to Paribus, and its key focus is on enforcing credit card benefits that many people don't know about. It's actually pretty nice. It'll let you pick your credit card and it'll tell you pretty much everything about your card. I have the Chase Freedom Unlimited card, and I was actually shocked to hear some of the benefits my card has that I have never been taking advantage of.
From Sift's site:
We automatically comb through your credit card policies to show you all your benefits in one place. For every purchase we let you know what benefits you are eligible for. We streamline the claim process to make it as simple as possible to get your money back.
You can link your emails as well as your amazon account as well and they'll make it really easy for you.
I have not actually used Sift much myself, so I cannot attest to how well it works, but the app store reviews are generally positive for Sift.
Massive golf clap to zarraza2k for pointing Sift out.

Trim Savings - Referral Link

Completely Passive

Trim is similar to Paribus and Sift, but there's a certain void that it's trying to fill that the other two don't really seem to be filling.
Trim's main selling point is its bill negotiations. Instead of trying to save you money when a price drops, they're going to try and just nip it right in the bud and try to get your bills lower.
Right now they're mainly trying to negotiate with cell providers, internet providers, and cable providers.
Here's how the process goes:
  • Submit Your Bill: Submit your most recent cell phone, cable or internet bill to get started.
  • Trim Negotiates: Trim negotiates with your provider to get you discounts on your bill.
  • You Save Money: Trim takes 25% of annualized savings, but only on success—otherwise, it's free!
So, similar to Paribus, Trim does charge a fee. In a sense, I guess that's a good thing because it gives them an incentive to make sure to get some sort of bill decrease for you so they'll make some money too. Their rate is currently 25% of your bill negotiation. Of course, if they're not able to negotiate your bill for you, you won't pay them anything.
Trim does also monitor your bank account for you and they'll notify you of account changes (that you can set). For example, if they see a transaction worth $xxx, they'll notify me that I've made a large transaction. If there weren't already so many other sites/apps that could do that, I'd say that's a great feature that Trim offers.
One thing Trim also offers that is pretty nice is a cute little referral system.
Send your friends the link below, and you'll both get $2 when they connect an account...We'll send you an Amazon Gift Code worth $2.
So, that's cute :). As always, if you do happen to sign up with my refs, it's appreciated greatly.

SavingStar

Very Passive

Note: If you remember reading about SavingStar in my post from 6 12 months ago, nothing has changed.
SavingStar has been around for a very long time. It doesn't get a lot of love around here because it can often be referred to as the 'shittier version of iBotta'. While I agree that the products they have to offer for rebates are limited, there are two things that make SavingStar better than iBotta.
  1. Ease of adding deals.
On iBotta you will find a lot of offers on products you might be interested in buying, but activating the deals can be very tedious. Sometimes you'll have to watch an ad or answer a short survey just to qualify for a rebate. SavingStar makes it a lot easier. All you have to do is tap. Since there's no limit to how many rebates you can activate, I recommend just activating them all. Check in to the app maybe once or twice a week just to activate offers. Even if you don't plan on purchasing something, just add it in case you happen to buy it anyways.
  1. Ease of redeeming rebates.
iBotta can be a pain with this. After you activate a rebate and buy it, sometimes they will make you scan items (or did they get rid of this? I have not used iBotta in a while), and sometimes you'll have to scan your receipt. The process can be long. SavingStar makes it a lot easier by allowing you to link your store rewards card to redeem the rebates. After activation of a rebate, all you need to do is buy the item(s) from the store you have linked, and your account balance will automatically update.
When I first used this app (it's probably been about 5 1/2 years since I first signed up), I secretly linked my mom's Jewel-Osco card without telling her and each week I would activate all of the offers and I would just check the app every time after my mom went shopping and I would get so happy to see a couple dollars added to the account balance. Was one of the easiest beermoney apps for me at the time :). Jewel-Osco kinda got rid of their card a while back, so that made me sad, but you can still link the following cards to your SavingStar account: Stop&Shop, Peapod, CVS, Kmart, Piggly Wiggly, Mariano's. They have a handful of other stores as well, but that requires you to scan a receipt.

GetUpside

Semi Passive, DC, Virginia, Maryland, and Florida/Long Island.

GetUpside isn't really passive, but it qualifies for use a so many places (in the select states) that it feels like it deserves a spot on this list. Upside has been popular around here (for the people who can use it) because it allows you to compare gas prices at places, and earn cash back at over 600 gas stations in these three places. It's really easy because you don't really have to look hard to find the gas stations, and you just have to submit a receipt. If I could use this I'd probably just go to fill up, and while I'm waiting I'll open up the app to see if the gas station I'm at qualifies. It'd give me something to do for the minute while I wait for the tank to fill up.
GetUpside now offers cashback at certain grocery stores and restaurants. Does anyone know if GetUpside uses Empyr? I mean I told them I lived in a state where GetUpside works and I'm seeing I could be getting 20% cash back at Qdoba.
Like wtf bro i just want burritos in chicago is that too much to ask for wtf
whatever fuck it chipotle is better
In the DC area? You can also save up to 35% at restaurants and 15% at grocery stores near you.
It seems like they're mainly targeting DC area for restaurant and grocery cash back, but the play store lists DC, MD, and VA.
I don't use GetUpside because I live in Michigan/Chicago, and they have not reached us yet :(. They do have a referral program, though. Please please please, go ahead and start an Upside ref train below, I give permission on this post, unless the mods disagree.

SamsungPay

Completely Passive, Samsung devices only

SamsungPay has dropped so hard since I last updated this post. The only other thing that used to be on this list that has gone further was Expense Rewards (if you don't know what Expense Rewards is, don't worry about it. ._. )
Update: SamsungPay will now earn you 5-20 points per transaction, and they have removed all gift cards and rewards cards. You can now only redeem for 'coupons' or instant win sweepstakes. As of posting/edit they currently have $30 Uber Promo Codes, $25 Grubhub codes, and $25 Atom Tickets codes for 6,250 points, but these appear to be temporary. All of these codes have their own terms and limitations, so they're not as cut and dry as they might seem.
Samsung Pay has become my favorite way to pay... not only because I get rewards for using it, but because it totally takes a shit on apple pay and android pay. I am using my phone to pay at places where all of the employees tell me 'oh we don't allow you to pay with a phone', and I just shove my phone against their card reader and prove them wrong. It makes the process a lot easier for me as well.
Samsung pay has a rewards system where you'll earn anywhere from 10-40 5-20 points for a purchase. They have a level system each month where the more purchases you make in one month, the more your purchases will be worth the next. You'll have to maintain your levels to keep up the next month. Currently to reach the highest level (platinum) and receive 40 20 points per transaction, you'll need 30 transactions in a month.
I'll touch a little bit more on Samsung Pay's reward scheme shortly.
SamsungPay often offers various promotions that will offer discounts at certain stores or discounts on gift cards. As of posting they have 15-20% off various gift cards for 'back to school'. There's almost always some sort of gift card discount going on, so that could be a nonpassive way for you to save some money here and there.
So what kinds of rewards can you get from Samsung Rewards?
Currently you can spend your rewards points on some instant win games. I don't waste my time with them.
They also offer a few gift cards. Currently they offer ThinkGeek, Sephora, AMC, Uber, Best Buy, Gamestop, Shutterfly, and Overstock. You can also get a visa rewards card starting at $5 for 2000 points. These rewards cards automatically apply to your cards for Samsung pay and you can use them anywhere. SamsungPay has now done away with Gift Cards and Rewards Cards.
To anyone who has used Samsung Pay in the past (or maybe has not checked on it recently, or used it since the last post 6 months ago, for those of you who read that), they recently devalued their points.
Previously a $50 Samsung Rewards Card cost 10,000 points. Now it costs 12,500 points. I'm sad, and I wish they gave us a warning before the change.
Of course this is only for people who have qualifying Samsung devices: S6, S7, S8, S9, and the newer note devices.

Uber Visa Local Offers

Completely Passive

Just feel like throwing this important fact in here: I am a 5.00 star rated rider on Uber. Just wanted to boast.
Shop or dine out, get Uber credits back.
use your Visa card next time you dine out or go on a shopping spree at a featured store and earn Uber credits toward future rides. To join, go to settings in your Uber app and tap on Visa Local Offers.
If any of you are familiar with Swagbucks Local or apps similar to that, this is similar to those types of apps. Whenever you shop out at certain places you'll instantly receive uber credits to your account. It's really simple, and yes, this does stack with all of the other cash back apps you might be a part of.
If you're interested in activating the Visa local offers, you'll need to make sure you have a visa card linked to your Uber account first, and then you should see "activate local offers" in the app settings of Uber. I don't know if you'll see anything in the Uber Eats app, but you can use uber credits in either app.
There's really not much to say about Visa Local Offers, but if you're looking for some FAQ/Terms, feel free to check them all out here.

Cash App "Boosts"

Eh, Kinda Passive I guess

For those if you who don't know what Cash App is, Cash App is an app by Square that lets you send and receive payments. They've also expanded their app to support bitcoin purchases, and they'll also let you use the app as a checking account. With the cash app you can also sign up to receive the Cash Card, which is a debit card that is funded with your cash app balance.
If you have not used Cash App before, they do have a fancy referral program where when you sign up and send $50 you'll receive $5 and so will I. I do want to make this very clear: Cash App referrals can see the full name of the person who refers you, and the person who refers you will have your full name shown to them. If you're really private about personal information, be careful whose referral link you use. If you trust me, here's my referral link.
On a totally unrelated note, can someone please tell me if I correctly used the word 'whose' in the pervious paragraph? I'm really trying to get better at grammar and I still get fucked by who's / whose and who / whom.
Please note that if you want to use the cash app boosts that I'm talking about, you'll need to be 18 years old and have the cash card (which is free, don't worry)!
Cash App recently announced that their cash card will now be seeing 'boosts'. Boosts are their fancy way of saying that when you use our card at certain locations you'll receive a discount.
Once you have the cash card, you'll notice on the app below your card you'll be able to select your boost. Here are the current options (as of posting):
  • Coffee Shops (pretty much any coffee shop) - $1 Off Each Visit
  • Shake Shack - 15% Off Each Visit
  • Whole Foods - 5% Off Each Visit
  • Panera - 10% Off Each Visit
  • Subway - $1 Off Each Visit
  • Chick-fil-A - 10% Off Each Visit
  • Chipotle <3 - 15% Off Each Visit
So there are quite a few things I want to say & clear up.
  1. You can use a boost every 2 hours.
  2. You must select the boost that you'd like to use prior to the purchase. AFAIK you're able to swap which boost you want to use as often as you'd like. So when you walk into Chick-Fil-A, just check and make sure your boost is set to CFA. If not, swap it.
  3. In order to apply the boost, you must pay with the Cash Card. It's automatic. If your total is $6 and you're saving 10%, you'll only need a Cash app balance of $5.4 for the transaction. Cash App will cover the other $0.60.
  4. If you link your Cash Card to Apple Pay, you can pay with it that way and the boosts will still be applied.
Do realize that just because you have the Cash Card on the app, you won't see the boosts. You need to have the physical Cash Card in your possession for the boosts to show up.
I've been really enjoying using the Cash Card for purchases. Especially at CFA & Chipotle. It's really not a hassle. When I'm standing in line at Chipotle I'll open the app and make sure my cash app balance is enough and if not I'll just add funds right away. The boost is applied immediately which makes you feel good. It's like the guac is free at Chipotle after you use the cash card. The only downside to using the Cash Card is that you won't be able to stack discounts with anything else on this list... Unless you find a way to link the Cash Card to any of the things on this list. Regardless, 15% off at Chipotle is the best I have found, so I'm perfectly okay with it. If you're shopping at Whole foods, on the other hand, 5% might not be the best you can do. Stack a nice credit card with 1% Back from Spent and whatever other apps might have whole foods and you might be able to net >5%.

Empyr Apps

Completely Passive

In the last post I didn't include any of the apps like Swagbucks Local or Dosh (actually I don't even know if Dosh was out yet at that point). So, here we go.
I've listed this as "Empyr Apps" because all of these apps are basically just the same thing. I'll take the example of Swagbucks Local since that's what most of you reading this will already be using.
If you paid attention in the Visa Local Offers section of this post, you'll find that the Empyr apps are actually very similar to those visa local offers.
When you shop at a certain store/restaurant, you'll earn with the empyr app you have linked. It's actually really not that special.
Here's a list of some/most of the current Empyr powered apps:
IMPORTANT NOTE: You're only allowed to use one Empyr app at a time! As soon as you link up with another Empyr app, you'll be disqualified from another until you link back up.
I do want to go into this list a bit this time around since there seem to be more and more Empyr apps popping up.
Dosh might be the most popular of these apps right now. Dosh has nice referral programs as well as sign up bonuses that makes it very enticing. Dosh also has very decent cash back at the stores they offer.
Swagbucks Local will always be popular among Swagbucks users. What's really nice about Swagbucks Local is that the payouts are always instantly converted to Swagbucks, which can help you cash out sooner. You'll also likely get a slot in the Swago board filled out, which might be beneficial to you.
Pei is a really cool new app on Empyr that offers cash back at a lot of places you likely shop at. I talk about it above.
RetailMeNot is a newer one on this list and it's the only one here that I feel like I recommend you go on/off with. RetailMeNot has recently been doing a lot of "Spend $X, get $Y" deals at a lot of the stores they offer. For example, they are currently offering $5 Cash back for in Store purchases of $30+ at Staples. This is a really good deal for an Empyr app, and would probably be my pick for that transaction, but not most of the time since they don't have very many stores as options.
Here's what I plan on doing:
Most of the time I will plan on having my cards linked to one app... Probably Dosh, SB Local, or Pei. If I find a good offer on the RetailMeNot app, I would temporarily link my card to that just for the transaction and then link back to another app. I really just have to recommend you download all of these apps and see what they have to offer for you and pick your favorite.

TruNow

Eh, it's not actually passive... Ref = DCIBS9

TruNow is the one app I was really debating whether or not should make it on this list. It's not passive, but it stacks very nicely with a lot of these apps and it's really the only receipt app right now that scales, so I think it deserves a spot here as well as on my upcoming receipt apps comparison.
TruNow is a rather new app that will give you cash back at gas stations. It's actually a really easy process. You'll first go shopping at a gas station (probably buying gas) and once you're done you just upload a photo of your receipt to TruNow. All gas station receipts will pay 1%* cash back. Certain partnered gas stations will pay 2%* cash back.
The thing that makes this app so good is that it stacks with everything. Let's say I buy gas from ExxonMobil. I'll sign up for their rewards program and pay with a CC that earns a high rate at gas stations. I'll earn 1% from Spent and combine that with the rewards program and CC bonuses and earn 1%* cash back from TruNow as well.
You can cash out your TruNow balance to PayPal or spend it at a partnered retailer.
*So the issue with this app is that if you do choose to cash out to PayPal you'll only get half your money. So if you're using this and intend on cashing out to PayPal, just note that you're really earning 0.5% cash back. The minimum cash out is $5 for PayPal, so you'll earn $5 for every $1000 you spend on gas.
The app does have a referral program where you'll earn $2 for signing up under a ref link and the person who refers you also gets $2. If you feel like trying TruNow out, my ref is DCIBS9.

Conclusion

Well, there you have it. 10 different ways to save money passively. I usually say at the end of my posts that I can't even type anymore because my hands are tired. I think that's absolutely going on right now. Right now this post is just over 20,000 characters long. One of my longest ones yet :)
Please, feel free to leave comments or questions for me. Make sure to get one of your ten required comments on this post so you can enter that ref contest next week!
And that's it. I'm done :) My first megapost of 2018! This is going to be a great year in beermoney :) You just wait!

PART 2 -- 17 Apps That Will Save You Money Passively (Best Passive Saving Apps 2018) PART 2

Part 2

Hi, this is actually part two of my Save Money Passively post, so if you're starting here, that's probably fine, but just note that it might be better to start at part 1.

ReceiptPal

ReceiptPal is an app that allows you to upload your receipts from almost anywhere that you go shopping. It's actually a really simple process.
When you sign up you'll be presented with almost little scratch cards which contains 4 spaces. Each space is filled with a receipt that you upload. Once you reach 4 receipts, you'll earn 100 points. 400 points = $1, so basically every 16 receipts you upload you'll receive $1.
"So, mr Fishering, how is this passive!?"
Unlike most receipt apps, ReceiptPal allows you to link your emails and amazon account and they'll automatically upload receipts for you. I actually let this app alone for several months and came back to thousands of points and cashed out instantly.

Paribus

Sift (iOS | Android)

Trim Savings - Referral Link

SavingStar

GetUpside

DC, Virginia, Maryland, Florida/Long Island, and scattered throughout the US.

GetUpside is now available around the US in certain areas, so if you've been ignoring this app, I'd recommend you give it a look again! I'm seeing gas stations around me in both Grand Rapids and Chicago.

Conclusion

I don't really think there's too much to say here. I recommend you sign up for as many of these apps/sites as you possibly can if you're interested because while it may seem like 1% cash back at a store isn't a lot, if you're able to stack it with multiple apps, it really does add up fast.

My Ex-Girlfriend Isn't Taking The Breakup Well Part 12

After Ramsay left I tossed together a sandwich and parked myself in front of the TV. At this point I had no idea what to expect. I still also had no idea why that one guy looked familiar to me. Who was it? Someone who saw Allison and me when we were together and got jealous? That wasn't too far out there, as whenever we went out we got looks.
Let me rephrase that; SHE got the looks, I got the third degree. Guys would approach her even when we were openly affectionate. Allison turned them all down, but I never forgot how invisible I felt. Guys would offer to buy her drinks or give her their number like it was nothing. As an added touch, guys would look at me as if they could not believe we were together. The worst part? I didn't blame them for that. When I first met her and we started dating, I was waiting for the catch. Well, eventually I found that out. Still am in fact, because all I can say is I sure dodged a bullet. That must be why that guy looked familiar. One of the many, and I do mean many guys that hit on Allison when I was around. That also explained why even though I wasn't sure who he was, I didn't like him. Something about his attitude showed through his picture.
As I was going over the past, I took bites of my turkey sandwich, pausing occasionally to add in a Dorito here and there. I felt relief as I remembered this term would be officially over tomorrow. I had finalized Grades and all that remained was to turn them into the Dean.
That Friday I turned in my final grades and celebrated the end of the semester with Chloe. It was a stunning spring day, warm with a light breeze, perfect for grabbing some Frozen Yogurt. I loaded mine with hot fudge, caramel, and crushed up Oreos. Chloe herself wasn't shy either, cramming hers full of peanut butter cups, chopped nuts, hot fudge, and Sour Gummy Worms. We ate them as we walked along the sidewalk.
After I had finished mine and tossed it in the garbage I asked her something that I had been thinking of.
"Well lets see. Now that Millstone is dead, who else can we talk to that knew Allison? Someone who knew her before, knew her family like you did?" She had her spoon raised to her lips when I spoke. She chewed it thoughtfully for a few moments before answering.
"No one around here so that means someone from our old town or elsewhere. She has no family there so that leaves someone from school." She began counting on her fingers as she ticked off people. "Mr. Delany died years ago, Ms. Robinson moved to California before Allison and her family left town, and last I heard Mrs. Edwards has Alzheimer's. So that just leaves Mrs. Hansen. She was an institution at Andrew Jackson. That was our old school," she added seeing the confused look on my face. "You think she knew why the Dunbar's left town?" Chloe brushed a stand of hair out of her face. "Mrs. Dunbar couldn't just yank Allison out of school without saying something. Truancy and all that. Not to mention she was too much of a stickler for appearances to just let it seem like they just went away without a good reason." Good point.
"I'm guessing you want us to take a field trip?" She nodded without saying a word.
"If you don't want to I totally understand. No one could blame you for not wanting to bother."
"You know something? I don't mind. Not anymore. Sort of therapeutic really. I could use a little vacation too. Getting out of here for a little bit can't hurt."
"Cool. Shall we leave Monday?"
"Sounds good."
Before I knew it, Sunday afternoon was here and that meant packing my suitcase. Packing for a trip is one thing I really take seriously. A poorly planned trip can spell disaster. I can't tell you how many Spring Break horror stories I've heard over the years. Attempted kidnapping, robbery, you name it. So I bring all the essentials and make sure to leave word of where I'm going. In this case, that meant calling Ramsay. I also was partially looking forward to seeing Chloe in this setting. If you ever really want to get to know someone, take a road trip with them. You can't hide when your stuck alone in a car with them for hours on end.
After zipping up my black suitcase, I called Ramsay.
"Hey Vince, what's up?"
"Hey Detective. Just wanted to give you a heads up, Chloe and I are visiting Allison's old hometown. She knows someone who may be able to give us more on Allison's family."
"Wonderful. I also have good news for you. We were able to obtain some DNA from the bear. It doesn't match Allison's or Millstone's so its taking some time to eliminate people. But it's a solid lead. Mind if I meet you and Chloe so we can get a sample, so we can eliminate your profiles as well?"
"Sure thing. We're planning to leave tomorrow. She's coming by at 9 am, if you get here before then you can see us before we leave."
"Sounds good, see you then."
Ramsay arrived at 8:45 the next morning. I let him swab the inside of my mouth, and he put the swab safely inside some special kit. Chloe arrived shortly after. Since I texted her before, she wasn't surprised and let Ramsay do the same to her. He thanked us both and was on his way. As Chloe was putting her bags in the car, I stopped by and told Mrs. Arlington where I was going. She immediately pulled me into a hug. I couldn't see her face, but I could practically feel her expression of concern as she whispered "Be very careful." With that, it was time to hit the road.
The drive passed in relative quiet. We made benign chit chat here and there, but eventually silence would prevail each time. The radio would go periodically go to static as various stations passed in and out of frequency, requiring some channel surfing. I drove briskly, but without gunning the engine, deftly weaving past the odd slow driver or wide load carrying semi. Occasionally we passed the odd car off to the side of the road, its hood up while someone was either tinkering under the hood of sitting with their ear to a phone. But mostly it was miles of plan forest, the outskirts dotted with billboards warning of drug abuse, signs for McDonald's, and massive water towers that dotted grass and farms like giant blue obelisks. Here and there, a road would be cordoned off or restricted for maintenance.
As the sun burned brightly in the early afternoon sky, we stopped at the turnpike and got some Subway. I wasn't in the mood for Burger King, Popeye's, or Chipotle. By that time I had been driving for three hours and after a small breakfast of scrambled eggs, I was pretty hungry. Getting out of the car to stretch my legs felt amazing. I also felt much more alert after scarfing down my turkey sub. Chloe also wasted no time in chowing down on her roast beef sandwich. After we got back on the road, we drove for about two more before we came to an outlet mall. We had been making good time and since you always want to stretch your legs, we strolled around for a little while doing some window shopping. While I didn't know exactly how far we had to go, I could almost feel we were getting closer to Allison's old hometown.
As we passed more and more signs, the countdown to Maple Bluffs began. First 20 miles, then 15, and from there it went steadily down to single digits. Before I knew it, the sign welcoming us to city of Maple Bluffs was in front of us, the name written in elegant cursive with the M and B woven together on the thick black and gold sign. Apart from that, it was all a bit anti-climactic, Chloe only offering a small "We're here."
As the car wove its way through the streets of Maple Bluffs, the first thing that came to mind was that it suited Allison perfectly. The place itself reminded me something once nice that had severely diminished over time. When you first saw it, the town looked impressive. Lots of quaint looking Victorian houses with neat front yards.
But as you went in deeper, you began to question that, as other images of the town emerged. I spotted what looked like a closed down Ponderosa Steakhouse and Kmart next to a strip mall, the vendors in there also looking closed. I could imagine the locals sitting in bars with flickering neon signs repeating the refrain of "It didn't used to be like this."
Of course it didn't. Had it always been like this, no family would have ever set up roots here. Places that begin as shitholes and remain shitholes are always reduced to rubble; no survivors, no memories. Main street was neat enough with small, but respectable looking business and offices decorating the road. The place also had wonderful water views and the occasional nice house decorating the landscape. But apart from that, it was a bunch of throwback single story ranch houses. Money, like misery, loves company and doesn't do well alone.
Maple Bluffs was the kind of place that kissed up to the few rich people left in town, all in the hopes that they and their money would stay put. Of course, that doesn't mean people in town like having to brown nose the haves. In fact, odds are they absolutely hate it, having to play the game of who can bow lowest before the town bigwigs. Something tells me the Dunbar family got a front row seat to that little charade.
The center of town was main street, neatly buffeted by a number of brick buildings. Capehart Insurance and a mom and pop restaurant named Josie's stood next to Maple Bluff's City Hall, a looming white building with massive windows that seemed to be peering out over the entire town. It looked oddly out of place amongst the others. There was one other thing I kept noticing; amongst the fast food joints and questionable strip malls were signs advertising something called Hilliard Lake. As we had gotten closer to town, signs has also advertised it on the highway.
"What happened?" I asked Chloe as we turned onto Spruce Drive.
"To what?" She shifted in her seat to look at me, the seatbelt clicking as she did.
"The town. Every town has a story." She took a sip of her water bottle before answering, the cheap, flimsy plastic crunching in her hand.
"Well, it was sort of a handful of things. For starters, the people in charge of the city itself ran it into the ground. We didn't have one awful mayor, we had several. Of course, back then people didn't know that. Decades ago times were great, everyone was happy. Maple Bluffs wasn't wiped out overnight. It was more like death by a thousand cuts or an infection that silently spreads everywhere."
"Right. Corruption, incompetence, or both?"
"Both. Oh and don't forget arrogance. Can't leave out the last member of the trinity."
"Course not."
"People lived high on the hog for so long it was a shock when the butcher's bill arrived. Hell, I can't even remember what the little vanity projects were, but I know some people in town still can. In other words, what comes up, must come down. And down it came indeed. Hard. A town that was doing so well suddenly in the red, people want to know why. I heard it was like a Dam breaking. It seems to happen overnight, but when you look back, the structure was doomed for years. It's just a matter of who can pick up on it."
"What else?" As Chloe was adjusting her seatbelt, a Burger King sign went past her shoulder. I caught a whiff as we went on, the heavy charbroiled smell was somehow both alluring and heavy.
"That was at the same time local industries started to fail," she continued. "This big statewide development corporation diverted river traffic away from local ports and before you even realize it, local business is drying up. The haves families all come out ok, but then the have less families slowly begin to feel the pinch. But there is money, its just a question of what you're willing to do for it."
On the left was an old junkyard complete with body shop, the name on the sign illegible from being weathered down. There was an assortment of car parts in a small pile next to an old vending machine.
"So that's where Allison got the entrepreneurial spirit from."
"Perhaps. The worst part of all is the haves all love to look at the town and say 'Isn't it awful?' when in reality they love it. Not only is stuff cheaper, it tightens their grip on local matters. Less competition for stuff you know?" "I do." "And around here, you know who you can blame and where to find them. You know where they shop, where they go to church, where their kids go to school, where their wife get's their hair done."
"Someone remembers who didn't tip their daughter when they were waiting tables, but somehow managed to afford a trip to Florida."
"That's right. My family did ok while here, but we were one of a small handful. After I got older, we moved a ways away."
"Good to be back?" I asked nonchalantly. She grimaced slightly at this.
"Ask me later."
"Oh and I forgot to ask. What's Hilliard Lake?"
"Local amusement park. One of the few nice things from the old days that's survived this long." Even a shithole town always has one redeeming thing left in it.
"Fun place?"
"Not bad. The indoor waterpark is pretty cool actually."
"Good stuff."
We eventually stopped at our hotel located just outside of town and right near the highway. I had made reservations at the local Best Western. You can usually tell what kind of hotel a place is by the word in the title. Motel usually meant there should be a sign out front that said "25 days without a murder." Inn typically meant the place was a Bed and Breakfast with horrible décor and ran by people with no clue how to run a B&B. Suites usually meant a respectable chain you went to say overnight for business conferences. Traveling as I do for work, I've learned where to stay. We both got checked in without any trouble and were immediately given our room keys; second floor rooms, right next to each other.
My room was decent, clean, and organized. I put my suitcase out of the way, next to the overpriced mini bar. Then I took off my shoes, pulled off the bed's comforter, and flopped down on the bed. That always feels amazing. I wasted no time in finding the remote and surfing my way through the channels. Since there was no onscreen tv guide, that meant I had to find something the old fashion way. About halfway through, I found some old episodes of The Simpsons and kept it there for a few hours until it was time for dinner. Since I didn't feel like going anywhere, I ordered a pizza for delivery. To my pleasant surprise, it came right on time. As soon as I closed the door, I wasted no time in devouring it.
When relaxing before bed, I imagined Chloe next door. I couldn't help but wonder what she was doing. Staying in a hotel must be like nothing to her anymore. But to me I felt like I was staying in a foreign place. I slipped into an uneasy sleep that night, waking up several times forgetting where I was.
I kept it simple at breakfast, some eggs, tater tots, and coffee. The eggs were rubbery enough they could be a dog's chew toy, but the tater tots were hot and crispy, which was the important thing. The only thing worse than cold tater tots is cold pizza. After jumping in the shower, I met Chloe out in the lobby and we headed out.
"Good night's sleep?"
"Not bad, you?"
"Eh, it was ok," I answered as I unlocked my car.
"You have directions to Mrs. Hanson's house?"
"Sure do."
When we got to Mrs. Hanson's house, I parked beside a Chinese restaurant. The kind with Christmas lights in the front window and a generic sounding name that changes with every new owner. We made our way to a red ranch house with a bug zapper on the front porch. It's sickly blue glow flickered lazily as we rang the doorbell. We could hear footsteps of someone approaching.
"Chloe Vale, I've been expecting you." The woman I assumed was Mrs. Hanson swept her up in a hug. The woman was dressed in a oversized red knit sweater. It looked comfortable, like one you get for a favorite cousin on their birthday.
"Hi Mrs. Hanson, good to see you."
"Oh sweetie, you know you can call me Barb."
"I know, but old habits die hard. You will always be Mrs. Hanson to me."
"I know that feeling." She replied affectionately. She took a step back from Chloe as she began to she survey me. "
Vince O'Malley, nice to meet you." I stuck my hand out towards her. She gripped it with a surprising strength.
At first glance Mrs. Hansen looked like the teacher who scolded you for sharpening your pencil during class and chain-smoked in the teachers longue during lunch. She was a shorter woman, about 5'5, but had what you would call presence. Her piercing grey eyes and slender nose were neatly framed by neatly permed silver hair. But when she looked at me, I could see her eyes weren't harsh.
"Lovely to meet you. I've been expecting you both. Please come inside." As she turned to go back inside we followed her.
"Does it feel weird being inside your teacher's house?" I asked Chloe. "It does feel odd," she admitted. "Half the time your teachers are like your parents when you are younger. You can't see them as anything other than a detached authority figure. It's why seeing a teacher out in public when you are a kid is so weird. It's like peering behind the curtain and seeing the real person."
"That is so true."
Mrs. Hanson had let us to a comfortably looking den with inviting couches. The inside of her house looked exactly like I imagined an old teacher's house. Small and neat, but filled with trinkets. Random gifts from students sucking up for a good grade, and some from genuinely grateful students. I counted several porcelain apples and pencil shaped bookends on the mantelpiece alone. I could imagine Mrs. Hanson sitting up late at night, grading papers with a red sharpie, the TV blaring in the background.
"Please have a seat you two. Welcome to my home. It's good to see you Chloe, been a long time hasn't it?"
"Yes it has Mrs. Hansen. Good to see you too,"
"Who is the handsome young man, your boyfriend?" I saw Chloe flush slightly at this.
"He used to date Allison," I couldn't help but notice how she didn't answer the woman's question, but didn't flat out say no either. Mrs. Hanson shook her head and sighed when Allison's name was mentioned.
"Such a shame about her. But when I found out what happened I wasn't surprised. Her mother did the same thing once."
"Did what once?" Chloe asked
"Tried to kill herself. Although Mrs. Dunbar wasn't successful at it. Not that she ever really wanted to be. You know the old saying about people who say they want to hurt themselves?" I nodded that I did. "In her case, Clara Dunbar wanted attention from her husband. I assure you that had she truly wanted to end it all, she would known how to do that as a doctor's daughter." "Good point,"
"Was that what made him want a divorce?" I asked the older woman.
"It was part of it no doubt. It was kept very quiet around here. That was in about 2004. Allison was taken out of school for a little while. Frank Ballard, our principal told me the Dunbars was leaving town for a family emergency. Months later a nurse at the local hospital confirmed it. Clara tried to swallow a bunch of pills."
I felt goose bumps begin snaking their way up my arms. She must have known what her mother had done. Even if she didn't at the time, Allison must have figured it out later on. Chloe herself looked like she had just swallowed something incredibly unpleasant.
"Do you know what triggered it?"
"No I don't. Some people are just predisposed to hurting themselves you know. Might be through booze, drugs, food, or anything risky, but the idea is the same. Some people need death to be closing to feel alive. But I do know that in the months proceeding it, Allison's work in class had suffered. She was actually a pretty good student when she set her mind to it." Mrs. Hanson had the forlorn torn of one thinking what if. It was something I have done countless times about this subject.
"Chloe, did Allison ever mention her mother attempting such a thing before?" I asked in what was a surprisingly calm voice. She took a deep breath before answering.
"After I had known her a while, she mentioned in passing that her mother had a bad reaction to some medication and had to go to the hospital. That happened in a previous place they lived." Her voice was even, but her eyes said that on the inside, she felt the same as me.
I suddenly remembered those messages I got after we broke up, asking me if I missed Allison and whatever. Was her death in the hospital not her first attempt? I didn't know, but it seemed likely. I have to admit that at this point, it seems that Allison was far more dangerous to herself than she ever was to me. Mrs. Hanson sat upright in her chair. I could tell the old teacher was getting ready to deliver an important lesson.
"No matter how old a former student becomes, we can't help but always see them as the child in our class. For better or worse, we never forget our students as we knew them." She adjusted the antique locket around her neck before continuing. "Allison," she spoke the name delicately, "was a very interesting girl. I will never forget the day she stepped foot into my classroom. She was one of those girls who you just got your attention. She also had her own unique way of interacting with others."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You ever see documentaries of primitive tribes living in the jungle?" I looked at Chloe momentarily before answering.
"Of course."
"You don't understand what exactly they're saying, but you can tell the pecking order. Who sits where and with who. They have their own rituals. That's what teaching can be like." I knew exactly what she meant. Just as in real estate, one rule of power is that location is everything.
"So what did you observe?" I asked.
"Times may change, but human nature doesn't. Allison grew up watching her mother being put on a pedestal and doing whatever she pleased. Deference is the best word I think. Allison's family was used to a certain level of deference from their peers. Or it started out as deference." "What did it turn into?"
"Something else I've learned from teaching. Power is like mountain climbing; the higher you go, the more perilous the ascent becomes. In an animal kingdom, there is always a rival waiting to take your place."
"So who wanted to take Mrs. Dunbar's place?" Mrs. Hanson gave an amused chuckle to my question.
"More like who didn't want to take her place. The ones who openly despised her never had a shot. They had nothing to gain or lose by hating her, so they never bothered to be sly. But the ones close to her who smiled at her the widest and praised her the loudest, that's another story. She managed to stay on her golden perch for long enough. Too long in most people's opinion."
"So how did she lose it?"
"People try to get any type of power in any way they can. Kids will pick on another kid for a pathetic reason. Here's what that's really about. It's never about what they pretend it's about. It's just a means of putting that other kid in their place. That's it. Kids are vicious that way and adults can be uncannily similar. Clara could be a pain in the ass perfectionist about the annual gala, or a thousand other trivial matters. Know why?"
"To let people that they had flaws and that she saw them." The phrase made me think of all the times Allison could be a real bitch at the drop of a hat. It wasn't a pleasant feeling.
"Good man," she turned to Chloe approvingly.
"You did well seeking him out," she commented, seeming rather pleased with herself. She leaned back in her chair before addressing us both again.
"She would let people know in her way that she knew their baggage. That she felt so bad your husband was fucking the waitress at the café on Elm and what a scumbag he was and your secret was safe with her."
"But she never kept it quiet did she?"
"Most times she did in fact. Unless she had wanted to let it slip for a reason. Clara Dunbar knew how to make use of people's private humiliation. So she didn't lose any face around here per say, she just decided to pick up stakes and leave while she was ahead. You see, it turns out the she had a bit of a situation on her hands. Her brother."
"What happened to him?"
"No one around her really knows for certain. Whispers were exchanged in the ladies room and everywhere else in town; they ran the gauntlet from amusing to downright outrageous."
"I didn't know Allison had an uncle," Chloe replied. "Course not sweetheart. He was the kind of uncle you don't talk about in polite company. No, not that kind." Mrs. Hanson added when she saw our reaction. "
It's sad to say, but had he only been a friendly uncle, Allison's mother probably wouldn't have cared." I felt a sick lurch in my chest as she said this.
"What did he do?"
"He got mixed up in some nasty business. My late husband was a cop and he knew from some contacts that Allison's uncle had a history of ties with unsavory people. Was in some sort of business deal and the wrong people didn't get their money. Well, as often happens in these matters, someone ended up dead and Uncle........whatever his name was, needed a lawyer. A damn good one. The kind with a Mercedes and Esq. printed on his business cards."
"That's crazy"
"Oh wait, there's more. We knew what Clara hated wasn't that her brother had gotten into that sort of thing. It was that he botched it and now the family was at risk of being implicated in a scandal. From what I know, he could have been Jack the Ripper and Clara wouldn't have cared. So long as he didn't publicly embarrass her."
"Of course," Chloe practically spat the last word out with a searing contempt.
"Many people pretend to be something they're not. Hell, a lot of times people openly encourage it. The problems come is when a façade crumbles, which is always does in the end." "And when you can't pretend anymore, people turn on you."
"That's right. So what do you do when that illusion is at risk falling apart?"
"Depends on what exactly is being threatened I guess." I shrugged my arms.
"What exactly was at stake?"
"Not just the family image, which was paramount, but it's financial standing as well. In a place like Maple Bluffs, you can have status without money and keep your influence. Or you can have money without prestige and be respected, but losing both money and respectability is fatal. It's why so many 'old money types' are really broke but no one cares." "The name is their asset. You need at least the front of wealth." Chloe finished. It was an idea I suspected she knew intimately well. Mrs. Hanson waged her finger in a 'nailed it' gesture.
"But she wasn't wrong, was she Mrs. Hanson?" I added.
"Nope. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Clara knew better than anyone that people willingly tolerate almost anything. The one misstep people are merciless over is failure. It comes in many forms, but look at history, your own relationships, and human behavior. Generally, humanity is intolerable towards what it perceives as failure."
That was one of the most intelligent things anyone has ever said to me. Human history is merciless towards what it brands as failure. Most people only know Napoleon for his defeat at Waterloo. One of the most brilliant men in modern military with countless victories and other achievements; yet the one he is most identified with was his defeat.
"So when the old image fails you create a new façade, or move to a place where people will buy the old one."
"Well done my boy. In a city with a million people, no one would have cared about Clara's brother. But here, gossip is it's own little black market. It fuels everything; it lurks behind every corner like some boogieman, waiting to devour the next victim." I had never heard it put quite that way before.
"Her brother was found dead in a trailer about a while later. Died in a fire. That was about the same time Allison's father was last heard from."
"Mrs. Arlington says that not only did he want custody of Allison specifically, he disappeared after saying he would check back in with her after Mrs. Dunbar's trip to see her mother." "Mrs. Arlington?" she asked puzzled.
"My neighbor. Turns out she knew Allison's father. Did you know a legal secretary named Sharon who used to work for a lawyer in town?"
"Vaguely. She was a nice lady. Why do you ask?"
"That's her, Sharon Arlington. According to her, Allison's father was worried about his wife and he disappeared after Mrs. Dunbar went to visit her mother. She said that Mrs. Dunbar hated her mother."
"Oh yeah, no love ever contaminated the relationship Clara Dunbar and Silvia." "
Allison would never talk about her grandmother," Chloe confirmed.
"Every time it came up, Allison would change the subject. That was the same grandmother that Clara Dunbar took out a big life insurance policy right before Mr. Dunbar disappeared."
"Oh shit," was all Mrs. Hanson could say.
"That's not good."
"Do you know anything about her grandmother?" "No," Mrs. Hanson replied. "Wish I did."
"From what I know, the two were a lot alike." Chloe said.
"That wouldn't surprise me. I've seen it countless times; people who are a lot alike are either mortal enemies or the best of friends. Very little in between." "Allison did once mention to me that her grandma and her bridge club knew more dirt going in in their old town than the police blotter," I remembered suddenly.
"He was a doctor right?" Mrs. Hanson asked, a statement Chloe nodded a yes to. "That explains it. Everyone wants access to the latest medical gossip."
"What do you know about Allison's father?"
"Not a bad guy. A straight shooter and I always liked him, unlike his wife. But he was in over his head, as would any of us in his situation."
"How?"
"For starters, he was the kind of guy who always tried to see the best in others. In other words, a sitting duck for someone like his wife."
"So what changed?"
"I don't know if anything truly changed. I think Mr. Dunbar just realized something had been amiss for a while. It just became obvious."
"Something wasn't right with Mrs. Dunbar."
"Correct. From what my husband told me and what I can piece together, Clara's brother disappeared about the same time Mr. Dunbar was getting suspicious. I remember seeing him around town and his entire demeanor had changed. It was like he was looking at everything differently. The two disappearances were almost certainly linked."
There was another feeling I knew well; an event that forces you to re-evaluate everything you think you know about people around you. Mrs. Hanson tugged on a clip on earring and sipped at her glass of iced tea.
"I sure would've been worried if I was him. While I can't say why he seemed to disappear, I can tell you what I heard. Everyone had a theory which they were so happy to share, especially after the Dunbar's left town. The favorite was that he ran off for another woman and they moved to escape the shame. A close second was that he did business with the wrong people and he disappeared in order to pay the piper."
"What do you think?" I could see her brow furrow as soon as I asked. She took a deep breath before answering.
"I think someone did business with the wrong people, but it wasn't him. I think it was something ugly and big enough to rattle him. I also think Clara knew about what was on his mind and perhaps did something about it."
"That makes sense, since someone knew Mrs. Arlington and he were going through her stuff when she was out of the house." I felt my throat tighten up as I recalled this.
"Whether she did it herself or not, Allison's mother is responsible for her father's disappearance. She never wanted to actually die from taking too many pills you see. That was all a bid for power, she wanted attention and leverage. Happens all the time you see. Especially when a someone is desperate to keep a significant other close. Just like in that movie with Glenn Close and Michael Douglas."
I knew exactly what movie she meant. It was Fatal Attraction, a movie I could probably do without seeing again for a long time. As I remembered it, I felt a cold wave wash over me. I wonder if that was why Allison did what she did in the hospital. Was it angst over Millstone, a man who didn't want her anymore?
"It's like when a kid runs away to make their parents all worried about them," Chloe added as I wrestling with my thoughts.
"That's exactly right. Now if you two will excuse me, I have to use the bathroom. It's these new damn pills they have me on."
She left us in what seemed like deafening silence. I looked at Chloe and she looked just as stunned as I did. I had no idea what to say to her, so I stared intently at the lush red carpet on the floor. Before we knew it, Mrs. Hanson was walking back to us.
"So where was I?" she asked rhetorically as she resumed her seat.
"Long after the fact, my husband did some research on Allison's grandfather. It turns out that he got into a bit of trouble himself. Seemed he was a bit, oh what's the word, generous with prescriptions. Morphine in particular."
"Oh shit."
"Oh shit is right. Fortunately for him, things were a lot different back then. It was kept quiet and he got off with a slap on the wrist. Who knows if he stopped, or just didn't get caught again."
"I'm bet he just didn't get caught again," I offered.
"I would suspect the same."
"So Allison's father disappeared about the same time her uncle who also vanished was risking the family's reputation and status, a status built upon a false image."
"Correct. Chloe has told you a bit about their wealth?"
"Yes,"
"They lived in one of the nicest houses in town. Over on Belmont Avenue. It's still there in fact." "Speaking of their house, Sharon says that after Mr. Dunbar disappeared, she got some phone calls. Mostly heavy breathing but one told her in no uncertain terms to leave the Dunbar matter alone. They even knew she had been at their house with Jerry Dunbar."
"Then it's true. They really did had some shady ties. I don't know if you know this, but for years Missouri was the meth capital of the Country."
"No I didn't."
"Well, Allison's uncle didn't just die in a fire; he died in a fire caused by an explosion. He and another guy were trying to make meth. Not well I might add. None of this got out, but my husband managed to find it as well."
"Why didn't it get out?"
"Another meth explosion in a trailer and couple of nameless gangbangers dead? Not exactly breaking news. The fact that he didn't have the name Dunbar also helped a lot. You asked how Clara confronted the issue of her brother, well that's it, they just didn't react. Every family has their black sheep and no one can be blamed for that. In fact, had people found out she would have made them feel sorry for her. That's how clever she was. I do have to give her that; she was a clever one. Way smarter than most people around here. Her husband was no fool, but she was far ahead of him."
"On that note, when I met Allison she was the manager of a bar. After she died and they started looking into the place, they found that according to the official paperwork, the registered owner is her mother."
"Interesting, but that doesn't surprise me at all. I could easily see her putting her daughter up as the pretty girl drawing people in while she was the one running the show from behind the scenes. That's pretty much how she was around here."
"After we broke up, she sort of fell apart."
"I see. Why did you guys break up?"
"She cheated on me and had developed a drug problem."
"My deepest sympathies."
"Thank you."
"As u you can see, drug problems aren't exactly uncommon in her family and infidelity usually isn't far behind there. Personally I think Clara could have cared less about her husband, but couldn't abide someone leaving her, or the implications that might have." I knew what Mrs. Hanson meant all too well. Allison didn't give two shits about me until I was the one who ended things.
"The rotten apple," I felt myself blurt out. Mrs. Hanson smiled as if I had just given her some small treat.
"I like you."
"Thank you,"
"You wanted my opinion, well here it is. While the stuff about Allison's father or uncle is troubling, that's not what scares me." She removed her cat eye glasses and looked genuinely worried for the first time since we arrived. "What scares me is all the stuff we don't know. Because I won't lie to you, I think there is a lot more where that came from."
As we were leaving shortly after that, she wrapped me in a tight hug. Whispering close to my ear, she said "Take good care of her and be careful."
"I will."
By now the humid morning had given way to a balmy afternoon. But as Chloe and I walked to the car, deep down I still felt cold.
